One thing I find really accelerates player and team soccer development is to pick a specific theme for a particular tournament. Then this becomes the focus of what the players try to do over multiple games during the weekend. As a coach I can re-inforce the theme as part of the pre-game discussion, the half-time talk, and the post-game conversation. Examples vary by age of players but in the past we’ve focused on things like “Playing the ball to our wide players” “Playing to a target player up front” “Playing the way you face” “Transitions”, etc. The focus on one major theme for 4 or 5 games seems to really boost the players understanding of that concept. In addition to the fun of the weekend, what sorts of things do other coaches focus on during tournaments?
